COURSE MAP

Start Procedures

The start will commence in the water, between the starter (wearing a fluoro vest, carrying a flag) and the southern most end of Coogee Jetty for 1,500m, or the buoy at 750m mark.

- 5 minutes to 1st wave* start

One long whistle blast and all 750m and 1st wave of 1,500m swimmers can enter the water.

- 2 minutes to 1st wave* start

Two whistle blasts and swimmers MUST enter the water.

- 1 minute to 1st wave* start

The referee will ready swimmers at the start line, raise a flag or use repetitive whistles to indicate start is imminent.

- Ready Signal

When swimmers are ready the referee will hand over to starter.

- Go Signal

One long blast of the hooter and the dropping of the flag will indicate the start.

* 1,500m swimmers will be started in waves according to cap colour at 2 minute intervals. Competitors who are not in the 1st wave start are NOT permitted to enter the water until the "go signal" for the previous wave. This "go signal" shall act as the 2 minute warning for the next wave of swimmers to enter the water and make themselves ready for their start. For the 2nd and subsequent wave starts, the referee will perform a 1 minute warning and a "go signal". This is to ensure all swimmers get away safely.

Safety

Water safety will be provided by Coogee Beach Surf Lifesaving Club and other land support/first aid will be provided by St John Ambulance.

Race Conditions

  • The event is open to all swimmers.
  • Only well prepared and medically fit swimmers should enter.
  • Swimmers must not wear jewellery or watches.
  • Swimming aids (such as wet suits or snorkles) may be worn, but swimmers will be ineligible for prizes.
  • Fins are NOT permitted.
  • Wearing of race caps provided is compulsory and race caps must be worn over the finish line.
  • The event is open to participants of all standards and age groups so swimmers should exercise due caution when approaching slower swimmers on the course.
  • Slower swimmers should endeavour to start further back at the start lines to allow faster swimmers to swim away from the start lines first.
  • As much of the race is conducted in shallow water, no forward diving or walking is permitted. Swimmers may stand to rest but should only continue by resuming swimming from a standing start.
  • Any swimmer experiencing any difficulty should raise an arm to attract the attention of safety and support personnel. Alternatively, swimmers may walk from the water directly on to the beach.
  • Any swimmer withdrawing from the event, either before the start or at any time during the race, MUST report to a race official as soon as possible so all swimmers may be accounted for.
  • Please note that there are No Pets Allowed in the Woodman Point Reserve.
